The Importance of sleep.

Sleep is one of the most overlooked and underrated aspects of our health and recovery

Without good quality sleep, we can run into issues such as,

  • Fatigue & lethargy

  • Foggy mind

  • Reduced creativity and problem-solving skills

  • Concentration and memory problems

  • Difficulty making decisions

  • Reduced immunity

  • Frequent colds and infections

  • Increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, & other health problems

  • Lack of motivation

  • Inability to cope with stress

  • Moodiness and irritability

  • Impaired motor skills & an increased risk of accidents

How much sleep will depend on a vast amount of factors from the amount of exercise you perform to how much daily stress you are under.

The average adult will need anything from 7-9 hours of good quality sleep per night.

There are also some negative factors that we may not even think about that can affect the quality of our sleep like,

  • Eating large meals before bed

  • Drinking too much liquid before bed

  • Consuming Caffeine in the latter part of the day

  • And drinking alcohol before bed

  • Looking at bright screens to close to bedtime

Just to name a few.

But we can also set ourselves up for a better nights sleep by managing our stress especially before bedtime by,

  • Writing down any problems or issues on paper

  • Conduct some deep breathing techniques

  • Use meditation and relaxation techniques

  • Avoid any stressing tasks or thoughts before bed

  • Keep the bedroom clean and tidy

  • Have a hot shower or bath

  • Do something you enjoy before bed

We can also set up our bedrooms to optimise our sleeping environment by,

  • Eliminate noises that may disturb your sleep

  • Keep our bedroom at the right temperature (18-22C/64-72F)

  • Ensure the room is dark enough

  • Ensure your bed is comfortable enough

I hope this little rundown helps and that you all sleep better tonight after reading it.
